SlopeScope - automated video for snowboarders
SlopeScope is a conceptual service for snowboarders which allows passive recording from multiple angles on a slope. Riders can review, share and learn from footage both on the slope on mobile devices such as iPhone or from the comfort of a web browser at home.
Imagine training for a race and being able to see exactly how you took a particular gate while waiting in line for the tow back to the top to try again or being able to take home a memento of your very first time on the slopes to share with your friends and family.
Involved: Processing, Arduino, jQuery, PHP, Objective-C, PhoneGap, Final Cut Studio, After Effects, Photoshop, blood, sweat and tears.
This project won the CyberDuck Associate Prize at New Designers 2010. Although it's currently on the back-burner I'd be willing to take this one up again and complete it given sufficient interest, get in touch if you would like to work with me on it.

The Velocity Officer's Helmet - industrial design with a twist
"Many people assume that the discipline we now call interaction design began with the emergence of the personal computer, but sensitive professionals have been conceiving and crafting our interactions with objects for centuries, long before digital technology."
- Graham Pullin, Course Director of Digital Interaction Design, University of DundeeThe hat is entirely fictional and was designed not to trick the viewer into believing it really existed (although, it often did) but to encourage them to think about the intricate details of the interactions which have been crafted.
Designed with the era in mind the hat incorporates hidden modern components to make the whole illusion 'real' and was exhibited at Dundee University's "Museum of Lost Interactions" in the "Hats from the Attic" exhbit of 2008.
Involved: Arduino, Photoshop, stitching and sewing

MargeryMail - connecting generations
MargeryMail is a prototype writing block designed to allow my Granny (Margery) to communicate with me using her favoured medium - paper and pen. She can send postcards, newspaper clippings or letters by simply 'posting' them into the side of her writing slab. Her messages are then sent to me as an email (my favoured medium).
The entire process was inspired by my own lack of organisation - I'd often open an envelope from my Grandmother and it'd end up in a pile on my desk. My email, on the other hand is highly organised and I rarely forget to reply. Any responses I make are then delivered to her via a letter box printer in a similar way to regular post, a process she is very familiar with.
This brief was set by Microsoft; we were competing in multidisciplinary groups (with Product Designers) for a chance to present our work at their annual Design Expo in Seattle.

Shortbread Stories
I was hired to upgrade key elements of this niche social networking website. Working alongside GSDD I was involved with aspects of the site's MySQL database, back-end coding (PHP) and impressive User Interface.
More recently I have been involved in the development of an iPhone application, this however is still under development.
The project has involved: PHP (Code Igniter), substantial jQuery and Objective-C

Objects for Grandpeople
I created this flash based website to showcase the impressive work created by my University peers for a brief supplied by Microsoft; we were competing in multidisciplinary groups (with Product Designers) for a chance to present our work at their annual Design Expo in Seattle.
My group's entry was MargeryMail.
Involved: Flash / ActionScript and PrototypeJS

The Museum of Lost Interactions presents Hats from the attic
The Museum of Lost Interactions (MoLI) is a module of the Interactive Media Design course at Dundee University. Every year it has a different theme and the students are briefed to 'discover' objects from the past. Each exhibit is to be entirely fictional but have a back story which is so convincing that visitors to MoLI are tricked into believing the object actually existed.
I created this website to showcase the various 'exhibits' created for The Museum of Lost Interactions. It is built entirely using standards based HTML, CSS and Javascript.
The Velocity Officer's Helmet was my exhibit in this timeless museum of interesting artefacts and was a collaboration with Calum Pringle.

Mill Design - Edinburgh based architecture & urban design
Mill Design are a small but innovative architecture and urban design practice based in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital. They required a website which allowed them to showcase their work and communicate with prospective clients.
I worked closely with the team to create this website which is built upon a custom made CMS, allowing them to maintain the content without the need to re-hire a web developer.
Involved: PHP and jQuery

Photography
I love photography. Everything about it. Although I am generally a digital photographer (I shoot a basic Canon 1000D) I have recently got hold of an old EOS 500 35mm SLR and am loving the analogue feel; once upon a time I even developed my own photos.
I am particularly fond of shooting people, long exposures and macro focus. I love it when I take a brilliant photo. It makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
I try and keep flickr up-to-date with my latest shots. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoy taking them.

Left is a small collection of my favourite illustrations that I have produced over the years.
I consider myself a digital artists and have created these using Photoshop and Illustrator. I frickin' love vector artwork!

Graphic Design
Here is a small collection of work I have produced which is of a more graphic design nature; that is: branding, posters, packaging, business cards, etc..

Sketching
This bundle of sketches, quick illustrations and otherwise incomplete images have been produced for both 'the hell of it' and to help realise some of my ideas.
I have included them here as I think they are nice images which show that although I am computer orientated an element of my former 'traditional' artistic skills remain (which are great for brainstorming and storyboarding)!
Yes, I realise there are a lot of nakey ladies, but Life Drawing is my favourite type of traditional drawing!

Exhibition Design
Throughout my time at University I was very fortunate to be given many opportunities to exhibit my work. With every exhibition which we put on I was always very keen to ensure that I was involved in all aspects of the design (from choosing the colour scheme to physically building the space).
Notably our Degree show was highly praised for its impressive and professional look and our stand at New Designers was short-listed for the "Best Stand" award.
